Mass Alternative Care

The Amherst location’s defining chapter unfolded through a public permitting process. In July 2019, The Boston Globe reported that Mass Alternative Care had submitted an application for an Amherst retail store. Four months later, Amherst Indy covered a two-hour zoning-board hearing at which the company received a special-permit modification for the University Drive site. The report described the medical operation in the north portion and plans for recreational sales in the former hospice shop to its south, using separate guarded entrances. For shoppers, that history makes the retailer’s two current Amherst menu paths more legible: one is recreational and one is medical. Its deals page also says the loyalty program is available to both medical patients and adult customers.

Google currently lists wheelchair-accessible parking and a wheelchair-accessible entrance. It also lists debit-card acceptance, no curbside pickup or delivery, and daily hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; check those details before visiting.

For local planning, Google Routes gives McGuirk Alumni Stadium as a 0.57-mile, 12-minute walk and Amherst College as a 0.96-mile, 24-minute walk. It gives The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art as a 4.98-mile, 11-minute drive; that driving estimate is traffic-unaware, not live-traffic guidance.
