Salty Farmers arrived through a distinctly local opening debate: how long shoppers should have to pre-schedule visits. In May 2021, The Provincetown Independent reported that Eastham’s select board cut that requirement from six months to six weeks before the planned opening. The episode adds a civic dimension to the store’s origin story, with local officials recalibrating how its debut would work.
The people behind Salty Farmers were also pursuing relationships beyond one storefront. The Provincetown Independent identified Harlen Howard and Jonah Turner as co-owners and reported that they joined Zachary Ment, owner of the Piping Plover in Wellfleet, in proposing a 960-square-foot North Truro cultivation site for their businesses. The publication later reported plans involving KushKart, a home-delivery startup proposed for a nonpublic building in North Eastham. Neither report establishes that those proposed ventures were completed, but together they document ambitions spanning retail, cultivation, and delivery. In July 2021, Howard told Herald Times Reporter that the Brackett Road store had received its final license and was expected to open within weeks.
