About this dispensary

Before Redi carried its current name, the project was called Cypress Tree and its Elliot Street space had housed the Green Tea restaurant. In a July 2021 preview, Patch reported that the interior was gutted and the building and parking lot were slated for renovation. The name change and restaurant conversion give this Newton shop a concrete origin story beyond the usual ribbon-cutting shorthand.

What stands out

Redi’s local connection comes through two accounts with slightly different vantage points. The retailer says its team was founded in 2017 and focuses only on the Massachusetts cannabis market. CannabisDirectory.co reported in 2023 that the founders had lived in the Metro West suburb their whole lives and created the Newton store in part to offer a more intimate shopping experience than they felt national chains provided. Patch’s 2021 preview adds the physical backstory: CEO Victor Chiang described the former restaurant renovation and said the business had originally been called Cypress Tree. Together, those details frame Redi as a project shaped by its founders’ stated local ties and an existing commercial space.
